Emissions
Exhaust emissions are not somthing that you can check yourself without specialised equipment, however there are ways that you can keep emissions low or stop them creeping up.
If you are serious about DIY there are several gas testers on the market starting from about 75.00
1 Have your engine serviced on a regular basis.
2 Pay attention to the air filter and make sure it is clean. The air filter is changed in most services but clean it or replace between services. Because a clogged or dirty air filter will make the engine run rich by cutting down the amount of air entering the engine. If you have a catalytic converter this could become damaged, if the engine runs rich for any length of time. (expensive)
3 Make sure that the spark plugs are changed at correct intervals (usually every 12000 miles)
4 Do not adjust the fuel system in any way unless you have the correct equipment and know what you are doing.
